Capitol Hill

Salt Lake’s Capitol Hill Neighborhood

Utah State Capitol Building

Our gracious Capitol Hill and surrounding neighborhood is full of views, history and fun! The housing around the Capitol is comprised of single family homes, duplexes, condos and apartments. From almost every home there’s some type of view – some lucky homeowners have the idyllic views of the Capitol’s expansive lawn and shade trees. Others have sweeping valley, lake or mountain views, but the serene and spacious views of City Creek Canyon and Memory Grove are our very favorite.

Bike, Hike, Walk, Run, Picnic and Play.

Moving just east of the Capitol you’ll find City Creek Canyon – a great place to run, bike, walk, hike, picnic and play, it’s graceful in the winter and refreshing in the summer! A quiet, undeveloped area just north of the city center. The entrance is in Memory Grove, one of the best off-leash dog parks in the city. You’ll love the Freedom Trail in Memory Grove with a stream boarding the west side of the entire trail and an open area near the top, you can expect it to be landscaped with lawns, statues and memorials that honor American soldiers.

The Capitol itself rests on over 40 acres, with beautifully maintained, sculpted lawns and trees of all kinds. From Capitol Hill, the area slopes down to the south, overlooking downtown Salt Lake City, the LDS Temple and City Creek Shopping Center, SLC’s newest and most elegant mall. Views to the west of the hill sweep over tree-lined streets and the Great Salt Lake.

Community Spirit

Bordered by Marmalade Hill, which is undergoing a surge in popularity, both communities are experiencing renovations, improvements and excitement that draw people to the area, making both real hot spots for buyers, renters and investors.

Historic Architecture

The architecture and history on the “The Hill” is rich. Home to historic buildings like the White Memorial Chapel, a gorgeous Gothic Revival dedicated to non-denominational services and the elegant McCune Mansion built in 1901. Take a stroll and see the sites, the Utah Heritage Foundation provides a walking tour of the area.

Movies in the Park

Each summer the Capitol Preservation Board and the Utah Film Commission host a free movie series called “Movies Under the Stars”, Fridays from June to August (weather permitting). Salt Lake City residents gather on the south lawn to watch a variety of free, family-friendly flicks. Pack your picnic and join the fun!

A key feature of the Capitol Hill area is the Conference Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The stepped rooftop has been landscaped with native grasses, trees, and a 67-foot waterfall – gorgeous! This beautiful space seats 21,000 people, hosting church and civic events throughout the year.

Brigham Young Historic Park, south of the Capitol and east of Temple Square, is a beautiful, green area featuring pioneers and a water wheel cycling the waters of City Creek. During the summer, the park is especially popular for hosting free evening concerts of local and internationally known musicians and talks on various topics.
